Elan Valley - Upland Birds & Raptors

This is a 2-site field trip beginning at the Ellan Valley Visitor Centre where we shall spend about 2 hours in woodland and along the river which will include some steep slopes looking for returning early migrants such as Common Sandpiper. Possible resident birds may include Dipper, Grey Wagtail and Treecreeper.

Returning to our cars we shall drive to the head of the valley for a walk through conifers hoping to spot Goshawk and Crossbill. On route to the moorland we will also stop at a couple of sites to scan the reservoirs for passage water fowl and waders if the water level is suitable. Lunch in cars while scanning the reservoirs.

On the mountain road we shall look for upland species including Curlew, Stonechat, Golden Plover and the outside chance of Merlin.

The terrain will be rough underfoot with some gradients.
